Character Name: Kael’thas Sunstrider
Character Series: Warcraft III / World of Warcraft
Age: That is never stated – it’s only said that he was “several centuries old” when he started to court a human woman. My guess is that he’s around 500, which is young adult ish… think 18-20.

Background: Prince Kael’thas Sunstrider (or Kael for familiar usage) is the last surviving member of the Sunstrider Dynasty. He is a high elf (now called a blood elf) who lived in the forests of Quel’thalas before it was destroyed.

Like most elves, Kael’thas has a great talent and aptitude for magic. Along with this comes the ability of an exceptional swordsman, making him somewhat of an anomaly amongst the high elves. At a young age, Kael was sent to the magical city of Dalaran to study both magic and swordplay, and he very quickly began to excel at both. He had many friends there, and the one who stood out most to him was a young human woman named Jaina Proudmoore. Despite his guilt at their huge age difference (something like 450 to 16), Kael cautiously attempted to court her – but she rebuked him, saying she was too dedicated to her studies. When rumors began floating around that she was involved with the human prince Arthas Menethil, Kael was heartbroken.

Not long after that, word reached Dalaran that Arthas had gone mad and murdered his own father, the King of Lordaeron. Directly to the south of Quel’thalas, the human kingdom of Loraderon had known generations of peace until that day. Kael was disturbed to hear of this news, and shortly thereafter, word reached Dalaran that Quel’thalas had been sacked. Devastated, Kael returned to his homeland to find it in ashes, and the beautiful capital of Silvermoon City completely destroyed. His father, Anasterian Sunstrider, was dead – making him the heir apparent. Refusing to take the title of king, Kael rallied the survivors and led them out of the now ruined, undead-infested forests. As though to spite the undead invaders, Kael torched the remaining trees to give them less to pillage.

Furious at the Alliance who had failed him and the Horde who didn’t seem to care either way, Kael led his people as best he could under the circumstances. A new tragedy had arisen – the destruction of the Sunwell, the source of magic in Quel’thalas, had revealed that the bereft elves were addicted to magical energy. Without it, they were suffering horribly… and Kael was absolutely certain this would lead to their eventual deaths. Desperate, he made the move that would change his life forever and mark the beginning of his fall from the Light – he turned to Illidan Stormrage, the Betrayer, for help.

Illidan led Kael and the strongest of his surviving countrymen to the Outlands, a mysterious world nothing like his homeworld of Azeroth. Kael was a bit unnerved at first, but pushed on by the desire to save his people and restore his kingdom, he agreed to follow Illidan’s bidding. He sent a force of blood elves back to Quel’thalas to retake the forests from the undead and turned his attention completely to serving his new master. Along with Lady Vashj, one of Illidan’s naga, Kael took out the pit lord Magtheridon and installed Illidan as Lord of the Outlands. He then turned his attention to Netherstorm and Tempest Keep in the north, desperate for a method of sating his addiction to magic and even more desperate for a way to right all the wrongs Arthas had caused.

(This is where the game kind of leaves off – we’re at this point in World of Warcraft. Quel’thalas has been restored, but Kael’s people have no idea how far he’s fallen. In short – Illidan ends up going somewhat insane, and Kael betrays him in favor of a new master – the dark lord Kil’jaeden. Now Kael is well and truly insane, and there is really nothing left of the person he was before.)

Personality: Kael was a kind and compassionate person before Quel’thalas was destroyed. Afterwards he became bitter and jaded, caring only to avenge his people and restore his kingdom to its former glory. Every step he takes – even though it leads to his downfall – is for Quel’thalas. As we are in the game now, he is extremely bitter and cruel to anyone who isn’t a blood elf… he cares for his people and nothing else. He’s become corrupted by the demonic power he meddles with in the hopes of finding a cure for the magical addiction which plagues him and the rest.

I’m going to play him as he is when the players are able to defeat him in Tempest Keep – assuming that the chains of corruption are broken from him (as many speculate but we don’t know ‘coz Blizzard hasn’t told us yet), he will revert to the way he was before the destruction of Quel’thalas.

Item Lost: He has lost Flamestrike, the ancestral sword of his family.
